Harry Iles takes a quick look at how Liverpool’s summer signings have performed so far.
Liverpool has begun the season with various new signings dominating the team sheet, as players like Sadio Mane and Gini Wijnaldum have played a big role in the opening few games of the season. In this article, I’d like to discuss the impact these players have had on the team.
You could argue that the stand out player in the opening run of games has been Sadio Mane. The former Southampton man has brought a new dimension to Liverpool’s game with his ability to run in behind and beat players with his blistering pace. Grabbing a goal and two assists in his first three games only strengthens what has been a solid start to the season.
After being brought in from Newcastle, Georginio Wijnaldum has started all of Liverpool’s Premier League games so far. Wijnaldum started very brightly in the 4-3 victory over Arsenal, coming away from the game with an assist to begin justifying his £25 million price tag. Although his performances against Burnley and Tottenham weren’t as good as his league debut, it looks as if Wijnaldum has become an important player in this Liverpool side.
After Sakho looked as though he was on his way out, chances were given to summer signings Matip and Klavan to cement themselves as first choice defenders. Klavan started the opening two Premier League games, but failed to impress after leaking five goals. Matip on the other hand, started games against Burton and Spurs and conceded only once. The former Schalke defender has brought a new physical presence to our defence with his strong aerial ability and height.
Other notable summer signings, such as Grujic and Karius, are yet to play a significant role in the opening stages of the season. Although, they do look as if they will get numerous chances over the course of the season.
