Why Liverpool’s new 2026/27 white Adidas away kit actually has red shorts

Liverpool unveiled their new home kit ahead of the final day of the 2025/26 season to a decidedly mixed reception from supporters.

Though the retro feel of the shirt is a nice modern twist on an old-school classic, the strip appeared to have a different colour in its shirt and shorts, which looked odd for fans watching on television.

As it turns out, Adidas’ new away offering will also differ in the shade of top and bottoms, with a white shirt matched with red shorts and white socks.

Liverpool aiming to replicate retro match tickets

Liverpool‘s new away kit is set to feature Adidas’ ‘Trefoil’ logo, with the German manufacturers providing certain clubs with more individual designs.

Reliable leaks site Footy Headlines have shared their effort for Liverpool, which is a clean white effort with red and off-white detailing.

As they posted on X earlier in the week, red shorts with a retro Reds logo make up the ensemble, and they also provide a possible explanation for the inspiration behind the kit.

“The Adidas Liverpool 26-27 away shirt draws inspiration from the club’s iconic European match tickets from the 1970s and 1980s,” they say.

“The design pays homage to Liverpool’s rich history in continental competitions, capturing the visual aesthetic of classic matchday tickets.”

While the ticket design may be in reference to a pattern on the shirt itself, the old paper tickets did also feature a red and white design, which Adidas may have felt could be emulated by mixing and matching the colours on the kit.

It should also be noted that Liverpool have worn red shorts with a white away kit in the past, during the 1980s, although this was a time when alternate kits were not always set as they are now, with the Reds also donning black or white shorts at various times.

During the 1985/86 season Liverpool did wear red shorts with their white away kits, and with Adidas going retro on the home shirt, maybe this also played a part in the alternate.
