Dominik Szoboszlai answered Robbie Keane’s challenge in emphatic fashion before earning new deal

Dominik Szoboszlai is on the verge of officially signing a new contract with Liverpool, and there is no player in the current squad who deserves it more.

It was an awful 2025/26 season on the whole, but we can’t forget how much worse it would have been had the Hungarian not been at his best.

Szoboszlai has always been a top talent, and Jurgen Klopp predicted big things for the midfielder three years ago.

But Robbie Keane previously wanted the ex-RB Leipzig star to add more goals and assists to his game, which it is fair to say he has now done.

Where will Dominik Szoboszlai rank among PL midfielders when all is said and done?

The Steven Gerrard comparisons are obvious, but what’s a realistic ceiling for the Hungarian? 👀

Dominik Szoboszlai’s goals and assists record at Liverpool has improved so much

Speaking in May 2025, Keane said: “He’s [Szoboszlai] energetic, physically strong and knows [how to do] everything with the ball.

“Maybe he just needs to improve in one thing. He needs more goals and assists. He has everything he needs to make that happen.”

Well, one season later, Szoboszlai has managed to notch 13 goals and 12 assists in one campaign for Liverpool.

That meant that he was the Reds’ second-top goalscorer in all competitions in 2025/26 behind Hugo Ekitike (17).

He provided the most assists in all competitions, and the joint-most in the Premier League alongside Mohamed Salah (7).

It was also the first time in his Liverpool career that, despite spending half the season out of position at right-back, he reached double figures in both departments.

While it is amazing news that Szoboszlai is penning a new deal, the futures of several Liverpool stars remain uncertain, with a number now in the final year of their contracts.

If Virgil van Dijk and Alisson do depart in 2027, Szoboszlai’s deal will prove to be even more crucial, given that he will be one of the very few leaders left in the squad.
