Rewind 12 months, and the idea that Alexis Mac Allister should be sold by Liverpool would not even enter the minds of supporters.

The Argentine had just come off the back of a brilliant, Premier League-winning season with the Reds, one in which he had established himself as one of the best midfielders on the planet.

What a difference a year can make. Fast forward to summer 2026, and after watching Mac Allister serve up a dreadful campaign, Liverpool fans have been growing increasingly frustrated with their No. 10.

How important is that Andoni Iraola connects with Liverpool fans off the pitch?

He already sounds like the opposite of Arne Slot!

There have been concrete suggestions that Liverpool may cash in on Mac Allister throughout the summer so far, but after he turned in some good performances for Argentina at the World Cup, Rousing The Kop asked supporters whether he deserved another season to put things right. Judging by the responses, it is fair to say that fans are split.

Some fans are not ready to give Mac Allister another chance

For some supporters, last season’s woeful displays from Mac Allister were simply too much. Asked whether his World Cup showings had changed their minds, some fans on RTK’s X page admitted that they had too many concerns over the 27-year-old.

“Not got the legs for an Iraola midfielder,” said one supporter. “No… We’ll get a really good price for him now,” added another.

“If he has the same attitude as last season he can sit on the bench,” someone else weighed in.

“The numbers don’t lie over entire season,” was another fan’s view. “We blame Slot’s rubbish tactics but he mostly setup in a mid block, it was actually easier for Macca to close gaps, cover ground and he still struggled. Whether he was saving himself for WC? We should cash in, buy Gomes and Wharton.”

“The question is, can Iraola reignite him?” one more supporter questioned. “Don’t mistake these World Cup games for Premier League intensity. The football is very different. Mac Allister was so leggy last season, was that Slot’s fitness team or are his legs just gone?”

Many supporters still think Mac Allister can recover

Despite the scepticism from some fans, others believe that Mac Allister both deserves the chance for a redemption arc, and can deliver himself one. More to the point, they think he should at least be given the chance to prove himself again under Iraola.

“We have to wait and see if he fits our new playing style,” said one supporter.

“He fell out with Slot along with many others. Let’s see what happens but he’s a quality footballer,” another added.

“I’m hoping it was the playing style rather than worse, like all our players they just didn’t want any injuries for the WC after Bradley & Endo and then Ekitike just didn’t go all in (just thinking out loud),” one more said.

“There was never an opinion to be had. It’s only a bunch of really dumb and entitled clowns who think that we should sell Mac10 and buy Wharton,” someone else put forward.

Finally, one supporter gave Richard Hughes some transfer advice to help get the best out of Mac Allister: “We need to buy Messi to play with him,” they said.

Whether Mac Allister can return to form or not remains to be seen, but we think it’s safe to say that Messi won’t be arriving to help him do it.
