Michael Edwards’ remit upon being re-hired by Fenway Sports Group in 2024 had been to help secure the acquisition – minority or major stake – of a second football club.
Having seen the likes of Chelsea, Brighton and Manchester City begin to deploy a multi-club model, John Henry and co decided that they fancied a bit of that, and brought Liverpool‘s former sporting director back to oversee the process.
Edwards and his team reportedly looked into the possibility of buying clubs such as Getafe and Malaga, as well as Brazilian club Vasco da Gama, but FSG ultimately decided to abandon the plan after almost two years of due process.

That decision has eventually led to Edwards leaving the Liverpool owners for a second time, but, before he left, the 47-year-old is claimed to have explored the chance to buy Ligue 1 side Monaco for FSG.
FSG explored Monaco possibility
Though many Liverpool supporters were against the idea of their owners taking over another club and essentially running it as an extension of the Reds, there were many in favour of the plan too.
The appeal of signing and developing young players at a lesser club before moving them onto Liverpool is obvious, and plenty simply saw this as the Reds catching up with their rivals.
In that respect, there could potentially have been no better option than Monaco, a club renowned for bringing through talents and giving them a platform during the early days of their career.

And according to The Athletic, FSG did look into the possibility of buying a minority stake in the Principality club.
However, after UEFA reportedly gave no assurances about the two teams then being able to compete in European competition with one another, the idea went no further.
Liverpool have previously done business with Monaco, signing Fabinho in 2018, with John Arne Riise also previously making the move from Monaco to Merseyside back in 2001.
This summer, Liverpool have been linked with Lamine Camara and Maghnes Akliouche, both of whom starred for the eight-time French champions last season.
