Michael Edwards has left his role as FSG’s CEO of Football in the first of several changes expected from the Liverpool hierarchy.

Edwards had been expected to depart when his contract ended in 2027, with the Reds owners having pulled back on their plans to buy another football club.

However, in some unexpected news on Friday, the former Liverpool sporting director’s exit was announced, with no direct replacement expected to come in.

Mike Gordon to resume football operations duties

Edwards’ exact role at Liverpool has been a little unclear following the news that FSG would not follow through with plans to implement a multi-club model.

As a result, it is not a huge shock to see him leave. That he does so with another big transfer window under way is more of a surprise, and comes with Richard Hughes on the verge of an exit as well.

That will leave fans concerned over who exactly is making the decisions at Liverpool, with journalist James Pearce reporting that FSG stalwart Mike Gordon is expected to resume some of the control he relinquished when Edwards arrived.

“Michael Edwards has stepped down as FSG’s CEO of football,” Pearce reported on X.

“He leaves with one year remaining on his contract. Owners unlikely to recruit a replacement with FSG president Mike Gordon set to resume control of running football operations.”

The journalist also opined that Edwards’ exit was ‘no real surprise’, adding that ‘FSG’s commitment to buying a second club was crucial to Edwards’ decision to return to the fold in 2024 to oversee transition post-Klopp. For various reasons that didn’t happen.’

Hughes is currently expected to follow his friend out of the door at some point either before, or after the January transfer window.
