Mohamed Salah called time on his Liverpool career this summer, but he is yet to join a new club.

The winger’s future has been a topic of debate for some time now, but he has been preoccupied with Egypt’s 2026 World Cup campaign.

That was until Tuesday evening, when they were knocked out of the competition by Argentina. Now, it looks as though the Saudi Pro League and MLS are the most interested parties, leaving many to ponder why Salah is not staying in Europe.

Fans suggested Mohamed Salah should be staying in Europe after Liverpool exit

Fabrizio Romano shared an update on Salah’s future, confirming the interest from America and the Middle East.

He wrote: “Mo Salah now expected to assess and review offers ahead of next step of his career. Saudi Pro League but also MLS clubs are keen on Salah.”

A number of fans then took to the comment section of the post to moot a potential stay in Europe.

Salah may well want to stay in Europe, especially if he still thinks he can offer something in the Champions League.

But he is now 34, and it is hard to see many, if any, top-level European teams being able and willing to pay his wages.

He was Liverpool’s top earner on £400,000-a-week before departing, and getting anywhere close to that sum from a team that isn’t in the Saudi Pro League or MLS does seem unlikely.

Salah moving to Italy was discussed during 2025/26, but as expected, it was suggested at the time that no team in the Serie A could afford to pay his wages.
