How many Liverpool players are left at the World Cup after Alexander Isak becomes latest to exit

It has been a rough couple of days for Liverpool players at the World Cup, with Alexander Isak the latest to feel the sharp end of knockout football.

Isak and Sweden were always unlikely to be able to get the better of France, and, predictably, they could not lay a finger on Didier Deschamps’ team, who won 3-0.

That meant Liverpool‘s No. 9 became the fifth Red to exit in the last-32, after Florian Wirtz with Germany and Cody Gakpo, Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch for the Netherlands. The mass exodus means only three Liverpool players remain in contention in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Only three Liverpool players are still at the World Cup

Prior to Sunday evening, the Netherlands and Germany would still have felt it possible that they could go all the way and even lift the trophy in New Jersey on July 19th.

Germany’s exit against Paraguay was the biggest shock of the tournament so far, and though he claimed a third assist in four matches to draw his team level, Wirtz could not really step up as much as his nation needed him to.

Meanwhile, the trio of Liverpool players for the Netherlands were also sent out on penalties, although their defeat against Morocco was, admittedly, less of a shock.

It does mean that having seen all eight representatives make it through to the last-32, Liverpool players and their countries are now dropping like flies.

Alisson Becker with Brazil is the only one to have progressed to the last-16 at the time of writing, while both Victor Munoz and Alexis Mac Allister will surely make it through for Spain and Argentina respectively.

All three Liverpool stars will have their eyes on lifting the trophy, and while Reds fans may be pleased to see key members of their squad come through unharmed and in good time for pre-season, it is a shame to see the club’s involvement in the tournament begin to wane nonetheless.
