How Tottenham’s Sandro Tonali pursuit could potentially end up impacting Liverpool

Plenty of Liverpool supporters would like to see their club sign Sandro Tonali this summer, but the Italian seems destined to move elsewhere.

Tottenham have surprisingly emerged as a leading contender for Tonali, while they are also pursuing an expensive deal for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

For now, Spurs look to be in a strong position on both players, but as journalist James Pearce has suggested, failure to land either may yet see them approach Liverpool for Curtis Jones, who is in transfer limbo after seeing a bid from Inter Milan turned down by the Reds.

Tottenham could still pivot to Curtis Jones

Spurs have clearly set out to drastically improve their team this summer after consecutive 17th place finishes.

Jan Paul ven Hecke, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have all arrived so far, with plenty more seemingly on the way.

From a Liverpool point of view, Pearce told the Walk On Podcast that Spurs could now be a contender for Jones, with the Reds not expecting Inter Milan to match their asking price for the Scouser.

However, reading between the lines, a move would seemingly be dependent on them not signing active targets Tonali and Fernandes.

“So yeah, I get the impression that Liverpool don’t expect Inter to come back with the kind of offer that they would want to sell, which is about 40 million Euros,” Pearce said when asked for an update on Jones’ situation.

“So the ball is very much in Inter’s court. It’d be interesting to see as well whether once the market probably steps up a gear, when teams start to go out the World Cup, you wonder whether there might be a few other suitors in for Curtis Jones as well, especially if clubs maybe don’t get their first choice, you think they might have a look at Curtis.

“Tottenham have been interested in him previously. So yeah, I think Liverpool still say that they would be open to discussions over a new deal if Curtis was prepared to stay.”

In terms of the money needed for Liverpool to consider a sale of Jones, they would likely prefer to do business with Tottenham. But that would leave the door open to the midfielder coming back to haunt the Reds in the Premier League. So, from a fan’s point of view, if Jones is to go, it would preferably be to Serie A.
