Liverpool are expected to have a busy summer transfer window, which includes signing a new midfielder.

Curtis Jones’ future is up in the air ahead of a potential move to Inter Milan this summer, while Alexis Mac Allister leaving is also possible.

Liverpool were already short of midfield options before any exits, so adding fresh legs in that department is a must. On that front, Kees Smit has been linked again and could cost the Merseyside outfit €60m.

Kees Smit could cost Liverpool €60m

Smit has been a reported target for some time now, and has previously spoken about his excitement at playing alongside Virgil van Dijk with the Netherlands.

He has been scouted by Real Madrid this year as well, following an impressive 2025/26 with AZ Alkmaar.

Now, TeamTalk have shared an update on the future of the Dutch midfielder, who Newcastle United are thought to be tracking closely.

It is believed that Smit could set any potential suitor back €60m, with the player now being offered to a few clubs.

Alongside Liverpool, it is said that fellow Premier League sides Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have been approached regarding his availability.

Rio Ferdinand urged Manchester United to join Kees Smit race

The 20-year-old remains fairly inexperienced at the highest level, though he did score five and assist 10 in 46 matches last season as a midfielder.

That was more goal contributions than any of Liverpool’s midfielders in the 2025/26 season apart from Dominik Szoboslai.

Meanwhile, Rio Ferdinand gave a positive verdict on Smit earlier this year, even urging the Reds’ rivals, Manchester United, to complete a deal.

He said: “There’s a kid called Kees Smit who I absolutely love. He’s at Alkmaar.

“Not many people listening probably know him, but go and check this kid out. AZ Alkmaar.

“He’s a Dutch kid, midfielder. He wouldn’t be one I’d buy to go in and start immediately because he’s too young and inexperienced.

“But definitely I wouldn’t want to miss out on him because I think you need to get two or three in that area.”

While he may be inexperienced, Liverpool need fresh bodies to compete alongside Ryan Gravenberch and Szoboszlai next term, and given FSG have been recruiting a lot of young players in recent windows, a move for Smit would make a lot of sense.
