Alexis Mac Allister is once again being linked with Real Madrid, and Liverpool’s contract stance is beginning to feel dangerous.
The Argentine still has two years left on his current deal, but reports from his camp have suggested there are ‘no talks’ over fresh terms. That is not panic territory yet, but after Ibrahima Konate agreed to join Real Madrid on a free transfer, Liverpool cannot afford to be relaxed about another major player drifting towards the Bernabeu.
If Mac Allister is allowed to leave, this could become painfully reminiscent of one of Madrid’s greatest modern signings.

Make one SURPRISE choice…
Liverpool cannot let Real Madrid repeat Luka Modric trick with Alexis Mac Allister
Luka Modric joined Real Madrid from Tottenham in 2012 at the age of 26. Mac Allister is now 27.
The Premier League background is similar. Modric had established himself as one of the best midfielders in England, even if he had not quite won the trophies his talent deserved before leaving Spurs.
Mac Allister has arguably more before a potential move. He is a World Cup winner, a Premier League winner, a League Cup winner and has already become one of Liverpool’s most important midfielders when at his best.
Liverpool themselves recently ranked him among their greatest 100 players, pointing to his Fulham wondergoal, his role in the 2024 League Cup win and his importance in the 2024/25 Premier League title season.
His 2025/26 form was poor by his standards, but that does not erase the level underneath. On his best day, Mac Allister is still world-class. He can dictate tempo, break lines, carry pressure, play deeper, arrive around the box and show the sort of calm that elite European midfields are built around.

Real Madrid turned Modric into one of their defining players, winning 28 trophies, including six Champions League titles, across 13 seasons.
Mac Allister likely won’t reach that level — few players have — but if Liverpool sell him too early or let his contract situation drift, they risk watching Madrid take a midfielder whose best years are likely still ahead of him.
The World Cup will be telling. So will Mac Allister’s first few weeks under Andoni Iraola. If he looks refreshed, sharp and central to the new project, Liverpool should be doing everything possible to secure his future.
A replacement might arrive, and Liverpool may feel the midfield needs more legs. But letting Mac Allister become Real Madrid’s next great Premier League midfield bargain feels like a regret waiting to happen.
