Liverpool are attempting to beat Paris Saint-Germain in a summer battle to land RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande, but must ensure they qualify for next season’s Champions League first.

The Reds are in need of another big transfer window after failing spectacularly to retain their Premier League crown.

Diomande has emerged as a top target in an attacking revamp, but as they face competition from PSG, the result of Sunday’s final fixture of the season could be crucial in determining whether the Ivorian ends up at Anfield.

FSG would be crazy to keep Arne Slot if Liverpool lose to Brentford… right?

Champions League crucial to Liverpool’s Diomande chances

Despite going three games without a win in the Premier League, Liverpool are still in a good position to finish in the top five on Sunday.

A point against Brentford at Anfield will be enough, and there is a chance that the Reds could even lose against Keith Andrews’ team and still qualify for the Champions League.

According to The Athletic, that will be a crucial step towards signing Diomande, who they declare to be a ‘leading target’ for Liverpool.

The Reds are said to be ‘serious contenders’ to land the 19-year-old from Leipzig, but will face competition from PSG, among others.

Critically, Liverpool are claimed to have ‘manoeuvred into a strong position’ on the player’s side, and will reportedly push ahead with a deal if eventually given the green light from Diomande himself.

€100m is said to be the target for Leipzig in terms of a fee, and it’s claimed that ‘much will depend’ on whether Liverpool do finally qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Diomande would seemingly help to replace the outgoing Mohamed Salah, and the Egyptian can play his part in ensuring that the Reds get over the line against Brentford.

If things go badly wrong on Sunday, there is no categorical claim that this deal will be dead in the water for Liverpool. But with PSG also sniffing around, and such a big price on Diomande’s head, no Champions League will likely mean another avenue will have to be pursued.
