Liverpool end their 2025/26 Premier League season needing at least a point against Brentford on Sunday.
The Reds’ campaign has been dire, and they could end up suffering more league losses under Arne Slot than they did in Brendan Rodgers’ final full campaign (12).
Yet, despite this season seeing a rapid decline from Liverpool and no signs of improvement, Paul Merson thinks the Merseyside outfit could actually be challenging for the league once more in 2026/27.

Liverpool backed to challenge for Premier League title
The title race could be much more open next term now that Pep Guardiola is leaving Manchester City.
Chelsea and Manchester United both have different coaches as well, and it remains to be seen how both sides will fare.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are planning to stick with Slot, who has turned the club into one of the least feared sides in the division.
Yet, despite a continued decline, even compared to the start of 2025/26, Merson still thinks the Reds could be in the Premier League title picture next year.
Speaking to Sportskeeda ahead of the Brentford clash, he stated: “Liverpool will have challenges next season, but I have a feeling they will push for the title. Call that an early prediction if you like.”
Unless there is a change of manager, which there seemingly won’t be, Liverpool fans will no doubt scoff at Merson’s early prediction.
We’re about to go into gameweek 38, and Liverpool haven’t even secured a Champions League place despite there being five slots. So it would be a serious shock if they somehow turned things around under the 47-year-old.

Paul Merson predicts Liverpool vs Brentford
Merson also backed Liverpool to beat Brentford 3-1 and said: “I expect Liverpool to win this game.
“I can’t see them not putting on a show to finish the season on a high at Anfield. They have to give their fans some hope to cling on to as the campaign comes to an end.”
Another big prediction from the former Arsenal player, especially as Brentford need to win this game if they want a proper chance to qualify for Europe next term.
But on the other hand, Liverpool losing and missing out on the top five would surely spell the end for Slot.
