The World Cup is a bright light at the end of the cold, despair-filled tunnel that is Liverpool’s 2025/26 season.

Alexis Mac Allister heads to the tournament hoping to go back-to-back with Argentina as world champions, having already won the biggest prize in football in Qatar. He is one of several Liverpool players who can win the World Cup.

As for England, they will naturally be viewed as contenders given the talent of the squad and recent track record at major tournaments. But Mac Allister made it very clear to Jamie Redknapp that he is not expecting them to be lifting the trophy in July.

Which Liverpool player would you most like to see lift the World Cup this summer?

And which one has the best chance…

Alexis Mac Allister not looking at England as a real World Cup contender

Redknapp accompanied Dominik Szoboszlai to the AXA Training Centre as part of a Day In The Life feature for Sky Sports.

While there, he got talking to Mac Allister about the upcoming World Cup and who he sees as the main contenders. England were not high on his list.

“Spain, France are really strong,” Mac Allister said. “But I always feel like Argentina and Brazil have a chance. Even Brazil is not in the best moment. I think with Ancelotti, good players, so they have a chance. But for us, maybe.”

Redknapp was clearly not ready to let that go. He replied: “But you’ve not mentioned England. Come on, give us some hope.”

Mac Allister then produced the line of the whole exchange.

“You think you have a chance?” he asked, before smirking and looking over at Szoboszlai.

Redknapp could only laugh it off, saying: “Well, I’m asking you. Blimey. Another coffee, please. Forget that. I’ll have a whiskey.”

It was all said with a smile, but Mac Allister didn’t seem to be saying it solely in jest. England have been close for a long time, reaching major finals and semi-finals, but they still have not gone all the way since 1966. The Liverpool midfielder does not see that changing this summer.

A sour end could be in store…

He thinks the field looks too strong, with Argentina defending their crown, France and Spain carrying elite squads, and Brazil entering the conversation again under Carlo Ancelotti.

Based on this encounter, Mac Allister will not be losing too much sleep over England. There’s every chance he has to back up that talk in the coming weeks.
