Ibrahima Konate leaving for free can’t be ruled out as Liverpool ‘doubts’ emerge

Ibrahima Konate’s contract situation has been dragging on for a while, and he’s currently due to leave Liverpool on a free this summer.

Konate spoke out about his contract in April, saying at the time: “We are close to an agreement. For sure there is a big chance I’m here next season.”

So, it seemed pretty certain that the Frenchman would remain at Anfield. However, it has now been claimed that Liverpool are ‘undecided about whether to renew the contract’.

Liverpool ‘doubts’ over giving Ibrahima Konate a new contract

Journalist Matteo Moretto provided an update on the situation when replying to a post on X/Twitter this week.

And despite the previous comments from Konate suggesting a new deal was set to be agreed, it now appears as though the delay is coming from Liverpool’s end.

Moretto stated: “The club is now the one that’s undecided about whether to renew the contract.

“The club is stalling; it’s not entirely convinced about renewing, under certain conditions… the outcome is still up in the air, but there are doubts.”

It means that there remains a chance that Konate will, along with Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson, leave Anfield for free after June 30.

How do you think Liverpool should handle the contract situations of Konate, Van Dijk, and Gomez?

Should he depart, Liverpool will have three senior centre-back options from next season, plus Joe Gomez, who is injury-prone and covers at right-back.

However, aside from Virgil van Dijk, the rest of Slot’s defenders (Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni) are inexperienced and are not proven in the Premier League.

That could mean Liverpool have to dip into the transfer market to strengthen their backline this summer.

But at present, at least, the Reds are not being linked with many centre-back options.

Liverpool have until July 19 to activate Nico Schlotterbeck’s release clause, though talk of a move for the German has died down in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, it was claimed last month that Alessandro Bastoni only wants Barcelona despite interest from the Merseyside outfit.
