Liverpool’s first team have endured a tough 2025/26, but the rising talent emerging at the club has been one major positive.
Rio Ngumoha has been the standout talent to be called up by Arne Slot this season, cementing himself as a regular fixture in the matchday squad.
But there are plenty more youngsters at Liverpool who could have a bright future, including Will Wright, whom Neil Mellor thinks is going to have a great career.
QUARTER-FINAL ONE: Rio Ngumoha vs Florian Wirtz?
Liverpool youngster Will Wright backed for promising career
Speaking to The Redmen TV, Mellor had high praise for Wright, who he says will have an ‘outstanding’ career.
He stated: “I’ve been really impressed with what I’ve seen. Works his socks off, knows where the back of the net is. And he does have that almost lower league mentality, it feels like. It feels like every time he steps onto a pitch, he feels like he’s got to put a performance.
“That’s not to say the other lads don’t have that, but it just looks to be something quite raw and almost unique about Will.
“Yeah, I think he’ll have an outstanding career. I really do. I have watched many young players come through the academy and one of the big, big problems they have is adjusting from youth football to men’s football. And I look at Will Wright and think, I want to play with you.
“You want to fight both centre-halves. And I get what you’re saying about sort of that style of play. We haven’t seen that style of play come through, a bit of a throwback.”
U21 coach Rob Page called Wright a ‘proper striker’ earlier this year, saying: “He loves a battle and he is all for the battle. He grinds the opposition defenders down.
“For his goal, I thought it was a great first touch and a great finish. I’m really pleased for him because of all the work and effort he puts in. He deserves his rewards.”
And amid injuries to Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak in recent weeks, he has managed to earn call-ups to the senior side.
Wright was on the bench for Premier League clashes with Crystal Palace and Manchester United, though he did not feature.
Still, he has been impressing at U21 level in the 2025/26 campaign, scoring six and assisting five in 18 matches.
Isak could now return against Chelsea, though, so there is a chance that Wright is not in the squad for Saturday afternoon’s kick-off.
But even if he does not make his Premier League debut until next season, it is clear he has a lot of potential.
