Liverpool conquerors Paris Saint-Germain will face Arsenal in the Champions League final after drawing against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

The French side took a one-goal lead into the match in Munich, and doubled that almost immediately, Ousmane Dembele scoring only three minutes into the game.

That ultimately made the difference, with Harry Kane’s injury-time equaliser on the night not enough for Bayern.

Liverpool fans may be hoping PSG can now lift the trophy once again and deny Arsenal a first ever Champions League title. After their battles with the Reds in 2025 and 2026, Luis Enrique’s team have plenty of admirers on Merseyside, not least Liverpool boss Arne Slot.

Though Slot has been unable to get the better of PSG in consecutive years, it would be fascinating to see how this version of the French side would have fared against the Liverpool of Jurgen Klopp. And after booking their place in Budapest on Wednesday, they have joined Klopp’s Reds in being one of only five teams to reach back-to-back finals in the 21st century.

Liverpool one of only five to go to back-to-back finals

It is now four years since Liverpool reached their most recent Champions League final, which, at the time, was their third showpiece event in five years.

Having spent virtually a decade out of the competition – barring one brief appearance in 2014 – Klopp immediately set about making Liverpool a force in Europe after qualifying for the 2017/18 Champions League.

Powered by a prolific front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, Liverpool reached the final at the first time of asking.

Though they fell to Real Madrid in a disastrous final for Loris Karius, the Reds bounced back, once again going all the way – and this time winning it – in 2018/19.

Prior to PSG’s two-legged victory over Bayern this week, that was the last time a team had reached back-to-back finals in the Champions League.

Real Madrid are, inevitably, also on this exclusive list after reaching – and winning – three consecutive finals between 2016 and 2018, while Bayern Munich in 2012 and 2013 and Manchester United in 2008 and 2009 are the other European giants to have achieved the feat.

Aside from Madrid, the other three teams on this particular list all won one and lost one final apiece.

Arsenal may take that as a positive omen ahead of their meeting with PSG on May 30th. But as Liverpool have learned over the past two years, this Paris team are creating something special and writing their own history.
