Pepe Reina’s three Golden Glove-winning seasons at Liverpool still stack up remarkably well against David Raya’s brilliant Arsenal run.
The Arsenal keeper just secured his third award with three games left to play this season.
Raya deserves huge credit for what he has done at Arsenal, but the comparison between their peaks underlines something many Liverpool fans already know. Reina was seriously underrated at Anfield.
Reina won the Premier League Golden Glove in three straight seasons between 2005 and 2008, keeping 20 clean sheets in 2005/06, 19 in 2006/07 and 18 in 2007/08. That gave him 57 clean sheets across those three campaigns.
Who was the better Liverpool goalkeeper – prime Alisson or prime Pepe Reina?
Raya is now on course to win his third straight Golden Glove too. He has 17 clean sheets in 35 appearances this season, with three games still to play.
Across his last three Premier League seasons at Arsenal, Raya has 46 clean sheets. That is made up of 16 in 2023/24, 13 in 2024/25 and 17 so far in 2025/26.
That is an outstanding total. It also still leaves him 11 behind Reina’s three-year Golden Glove stretch.
Of course, clean sheets are never only about the goalkeeper. Raya has played behind William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes and one of the best defensive structures in Europe. Reina had Jamie Carragher, Sami Hyypia, Daniel Agger and a Rafa Benitez team built on control.

The point is not to talk Raya down. He has been superb for Arsenal. It is more about giving Reina his proper credit. To be that far ahead of a goalkeeper many now consider the best in the league shows just how formidable the former Liverpool star was.
Raya is now getting the praise he deserves. Reina should have had more of it years ago.
