Liverpool make decision over whether to attempt to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle this summer

Anthony Gordon has long been admired at Liverpool, but for one reason or another, a move has never materialised.

The links have come intermittently over the past two or three seasons, with Gordon’s homegrown status, ties to Merseyside, and all-energy profile seen as appealing to the decision-makers at Anfield.

Gordon looks likely to leave Newcastle this summer, and of course, the Reds have been credited with interest. Now though, a fresh update from James Pearce has outlined Liverpool’s stance on signing the 25-year-old this summer. It looks like they are steering clear.

James Pearce says Liverpool have ‘no plans’ to pursue Anthony Gordon

Liverpool need to recruit in the wide areas this summer, with Mo Salah leaving already and question marks around players like Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott.

For that exercise, they won’t be going near Tyneside this time.

As Pearce writes in The Athletic: “Liverpool have held strong interest in Gordon in the past, but have no plans to revive that interest this summer.”

Rather than returning for a player they once seriously considered, the Reds look set to leave the race to others. Arsenal, Chelsea and Bayern Munich have all been credited with interest, and that may be where the real battle develops if Newcastle do decide to cash in.

You can only pick ONE player for Liverpool to sign this summer, who is it?

Gordon will cost £75 million if those asking-price claims are to be believed, which is a hefty figure for a forward who is not quite in that elite bracket.

It seems the long-term admiration FSG have held for the Englishman has now passed its moment. Gordon might still get a big move, but at this stage, Anfield does not look likely to be the destination.
