One year ago today, Diogo Jota scored his last goal for Liverpool before tragically passing away last summer.

It was a fitting final goal for the Reds, deciding a high-profile fixture in style as he so often did in a Liverpool shirt. Jota’s goals-to-game record in the Premier League was up there with the most prolific attackers to play at Anfield.

It was a game Liverpool were desperate to win as they sought to secure the title. He came up with the goods in the 57th minute — slaloming through the Everton defence and slotting it past Jordan Pickford with ease.

Diogo Jota was so often Liverpool’s man for the big moment

Jota had a habit of delivering when Liverpool needed him most.

Whether it was in a Premier League title race, a cup tie or a high-stakes derby, he consistently found a way to make the decisive contribution, combining sharp movement, composure and ruthless finishing in the moments that mattered.

That reliability made him such a valuable player for Jurgen Klopp, with Jota offering the kind of cutting edge that could turn tense, finely balanced matches in Liverpool’s favour. He was often regarded as the best natural finisher at the club.

His final goal felt like a perfect example of that quality. With the pressure rising against Everton and every point carrying huge weight in the run-in, Jota stepped up with a moment of quality that settled the contest.

In a Liverpool side filled with attacking star-power, the Portuguese carved out his place as a match-winner, and that is a huge part of why he remains so revered on Merseyside.

Liverpool have sorely missed Diogo Jota this season

Of course, the emotional impact of Jota’s passing rocked Liverpool to its core. It’s widely accepted that some understanding is needed with the players, who not only lost a teammate, but a larger-than-life personality at the AXA.

A less discussed point is how much Liverpool have missed Jota on the pitch. It is obviously of minute importance in comparison, but it’s worth acknowledging how important he was to the team.

So many times, he came off the bench and decided games. So often, he kept Liverpool afloat when injuries ravaged the forward areas.

He was a phenomenal player and a fantastic person, and the feeling of loss will carry on well past the end of this season for fans and players alike.
