Mohamed Salah has set such a ridiculous standard for the Reds that even a slight decline was always going to draw noise.

In 2025/26 so far, the Egyptian, who is now leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, has 10 goals and nine assists across all competitions.

That is a massive shift when you consider the level Salah had been operating at for so long, and a number of Premier League rivals are said to be ‘shocked’ by how much the 33-year-old has fallen off.

Premier League clubs shocked by Mohamed Salah’s decline at Liverpool

According to a report from The Independent, while the Liverpool talent’s age meant a decline could not be ruled out, the sheer scale of it has left many in the English top-flight stunned.

It is not the first time a world-class player has lost his edge, with Andriy Shevchenko at Chelsea, and Thierry Henry in his second season at FC Barcelona, both cited as examples.

In Salah’s case, the report suggests one manager had been left ‘terrified’ of facing the Reds ace in the past, and clubs have previously had to build entire game plans around stopping him.

However, in the current campaign, when his edge has dulled in a disconnected Liverpool attack, rival teams no longer appear to feel the need to swarm him in quite the same way.

Slot has hardly helped the star winger with the way his side have been performing, or with his decision to use the Egyptian in a wider role this term instead of his traditional inside-forward berth.

But with Liverpool still going strong in the FA Cup, Champions League and battling for a top-five finish, it is imperative that we see more of the old Salah in the final two months of the campaign.

Plenty of replacements, including Michael Olise, have been discussed. But with so few quality options behind him right now, the onus will be on the former AS Roma man to try and carry Liverpool to glory one final time before he departs.
