How Morgan Rogers could fit into Liverpool’s summer search for new wingers

Morgan Rogers reportedly remains on Liverpool’s shortlist this summer despite the Reds targeting new wingers.

Rumours have been rife for some time that Liverpool could push to sign Rogers at the end of the season, but recent revelations that Richard Hughes wants to sign wide players looked to have made that improbable.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, however, Liverpool may instead look for ‘creative midfield’ additions who can also play on the wing. Rogers is said to be a possibility to fill that role.

Which players should Liverpool target to replace Mohamed Salah this summer? 🤔

A seven-man shortlist has already been reported:

Rogers’ Aston Villa exit is a possibility

Taking to X on Thursday as fallout continues from Mohamed Salah’s bombshell revelation that he will leave Liverpool in June, Jacobs outlines the current plan at Anfield.

“Liverpool could sign two wingers this summer,” he says. “On the right, finding a Mo Salah successor is something LFC have been planning for long before negotiating an exit package allowing the Egyptian to leave on a free.

“New left-winger on the club’s radar since Luis Diaz departed for Bayern. Leipzig’s Yan Diomande is one target, and a player high in Manchester United and Bayern’s thinking as well. Leipzig value the winger at €100m, but suitors feel that price will drop this summer. Appreciation for Michael Olise but Bayern are not planning a sale.”

“PSG also working on extending Bradley Barcola and in no mood to entertain offers. Same for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who has been linked with Arsenal. Liverpool have historical interest in Anthony Gordon having almost signed him in summer 2024. Sources downplay interest in Francisco Conceicao despite reports.”

Jacobs then turns his attention towards Rogers, claiming that Liverpool do indeed hold genuine interest in the England international, and could alter their plan to fit him into the team.

“A more central creative attacker could also be considered,” he says. “Especially if capable of operating in wide areas as well. Liverpool are one of the clubs who appreciate Morgan Rodgers [sic], with an exit possible this summer despite an extension last year.”

Analysis: How would Rogers fit into Liverpool’s attack?

On the face of it, it is extremely difficult to see how Rogers and Florian Wirtz could fit into a Liverpool team also likely to contain Hugo Ekitike, Alexander Isak and another new winger.

As this season has shown, though, Liverpool are unlikely to have all of those players available all of the time, and Rogers could be seen as an alternative to any one of them at any given time.

There is also a possibility that the Reds see Rogers and Wirtz as two kind of roving number 10s behind Ekitike and Isak as central strikers.

While that would be incredibly exciting, it would rather negate the need for another winger to add alongside Cody Gakpo and Rio Ngumoha.

As a result, there is a chance that Liverpool go all in on Rogers and decide upon a new way of playing next season. The lack of pace in wide areas would remain a worry, but in Wirtz and Rogers, Arne Slot would have two of the most creative forwards in the Premier League.
