Speaking on The Rest Is Football X/Twitter account, Lineker said: “News has broken that Mohamed Salah will leave at the end of the season. 9 years at Liverpool and what a nine years it’s been, and he’s been a phenomenon.

“Unbelievably brilliant footballer. Two league titles, Champions League, two League Cups, FA Cup, Super Cup and of course the Club World Cup as well. He scored so many goals, it’s been so consistent for such a long period of time and I’d just like to say thank you, Mo, for everything that you’ve done for English football, in particular, the Premier League and of course for Liverpool.

“You’ve been a credit to our sport, it’s been great having you here and wish you all the very best in the future, whatever that will bring.”

During his spells with Chelsea and Liverpool, Salah has scored 191 goals in the Premier League to date.

That makes him the fourth-highest scorer in the competition’s history and the highest-scoring non-English player on the list ahead of Sergio Aguero (184).

He also has the joint-seventh most assists of any player in the Premier League, currently sitting on 93 alongside former Manchester City ace David Silva.
