Jamie Carragher and Wayne Rooney have very different views about who has been Liverpool’s best player in the 2025/26 season.
In the campaign so far, there have been very few standout options, though Hugo Ekitike could be among them.
Speaking this week, Wayne Rooney said that Ekitike has ‘been Liverpool’s best player this season by a long way’, but Carragher actually thinks Szoboszlai is clear on that front.
Who was Liverpool’s best player on another poor day at Anfield?
Not many to choose from…
Dominik Szoboszlai Liverpool’s best player by a ‘million miles’
Liverpool started slowly against Spurs, who were sitting deep and using their pace out wide to counter Slot’s men.
However, the home side broke the deadlock after 18 minutes following another free-kick goal from Szoboszlai.
Following the Hungarian opening the scoring, Carragher, who was commentating on the clash live for Sky Sports, said that Szoboszlai has been the Reds’ ‘best player by a million miles’ in 2025/26.
He said: “There is no doubt that Liverpool have a free-kick specialist. But Tottenham don’t have a goalkeeping specialist. You have to save that. Awful.
“Liverpool find themselves 1-0 in front thanks to their best player by a million miles this season, Dominik Szoboszlai.”

Hugo Ekitike fitness update
Ekitike actually didn’t initially get a chance to prove Rooney right on Sunday as he started the game on the bench.
Tottenham was the first of three games in six days for Liverpool, and Slot confirmed pre-match that the Frenchman had missed training on Friday.
He said: “Hugo Ekitike trained with us for the first time yesterday, but missed the day before.”
Slot continued in his live pre-match interview: “It’s three games in seven days for us. This game, first of all, is crucial for us. Yes you’re looking at how many games you have to play, how many games we’ve already played with the same players, but on the other hand, it also is looking at the qualities we bring in.
“In Rio and Jeremie, we bring in two players who can beat a man in one v one situations. In a home game, when we usually play teams playing low, that can be a good quality to have.”
