Jamie Carragher highlighted a problematic lack of fitness from Alexis Mac Allister during Liverpool’s win over Tottenham on Sunday.
Mac Allister has had a difficult season in many respects, and although there has been a little pick up of late, plenty of bad has been mixed in with the good.
That was the case once again on Sunday, when Liverpool‘s No. 10 followed up an encouraging first-half with a slightly difficult second. With Mac Allister struggling to cover the space in the Reds’ midfield, Carragher demanded that Liverpool address what is quickly becoming a problem.

Not many to choose from…
Liverpool must add midfield protection
There were moments in the first-half when Mac Allister genuinely looked back to his best.
He did brilliantly to slalom through several players to win the free-kick which Dominik Szoboszlai scored from, and was generally more positive in possession.
However, the second period saw a familiar tale of Mac Allister starting to tire and begin giving the ball away. Carragher noticed it while commentating for Sky Sports and urged Liverpool to do more to solve a growing issue.

“The longer the games go on the more Mac Allister struggles, I think that’s a real problem for Liverpool that they need to address in midfield,” said the former Reds centre-back.
“Curtis Jones comes on and the game goes end to end, he takes on the Wirtz role and I don’t know why, he’s not that player. There’s too much space when the game opens up and Mac Allister can’t cover it.”
Predictably, Carragher’s warnings fell on deaf ears. Not long after his warning, Tottenham scored to make it 1-1.
Mac Allister was not directly to blame, but his inability to win his own midfield battle contributed to Spurs getting a much better foothold in the game. This is indeed a huge problem, one which Arne Slot needs to sort as soon as possible.
