Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring for Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, taking one step closer to a Steven Gerrard record in the process.

The Reds were by no means at their best in the first half on Sunday, but the makeshift right-back stepped up to open the scoring.

After Szoboszlai smashed home his free-kick, he now has seven goals from outside the box in all competitions this season, which is the most by a Reds midfielder since Gerrard in 2005/06.

Dominik Szoboszlai matches Luis Suarez and nears Steven Gerrard record vs Tottenham

Luis Suarez, back in 2013/14, was the last Liverpool player in any position to score seven goals from outside the box in one campaign.

Meanwhile, Gerrard has managed the most by a midfielder in the last 20 years, scoring nine in the aforementioned campaign.

As well as closing in on the ex-Liverpool captain’s impressive feat, Szoboszlai also put himself in the history books on March 15.

After he scored in the first half, he has now netted four direct free-kick goals in the Premier League this season, which is the most ever by a Liverpool player in a single campaign in the competition.

Meanwhile, another direct free-kick this term would see the 25-year-old match the all-time record, which is currently held by David Beckham (5 in 2000/01), and Laurent Robert (5 in 2001/02).

Steven Gerrard’s response to Dominik Szoboszlai comparison

As well as rivalling Gerrard for long-range goals, Szoboszlai has been compared to the Liverpool icon this term.

The former England international responded to those comparisons before the Reds took on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League recently.

He said: “He’s really stepped forward, it’s gone to another level now. One of the best strikers of the ball I’ve seen for a long time.

“He needs to keep arriving from a No.10 or an attacking 8 position, he can get more goals and take his game to the next level.”
