Anthony Gordon still ticks every box for Liverpool – he proved it again vs Chelsea

It will forever be a source of confusion that some Liverpool supporters are dead against the idea of Anthony Gordon joining the club.

The Scouser is certainly a divisive figure owing to his Everton past – and he always loves to turn it on against the Reds – but he is exactly the winger Liverpool need right now.

As he showed during Newcastle’s win over Chelsea on Saturday, he has the goal-scoring instinct, big-game ability and, crucially, the lightning speed which has been completely missing from the Reds’ front line all season. As a result, Gordon must be top of their transfer list this summer.

Gordon’s speed is just what Liverpool need

Despite the fact he came through at Everton – and was previously thought to hate Liverpool – Gordon and his family are actually avid Reds.

While that does not qualify him for a place on the wing at Anfield, everything else points to the fact that he really should be.

Pace is the 25-year-old’s main asset, and as he showed against Chelsea, he has an absolute abundance of it.

Go and watch the clip of how Gordon sees Joe Willock win the ball high up the pitch and sprints easily beyond the Chelsea defenders to be in a position to receive the pass for a tap-in.

It is the kind of speed we have not seen at Liverpool all season long, and is just one of the reasons why Gordon must be a target. Defenders cannot live with him, and with more top quality players around him, the former Blue could become even more lethal.

Do not ignore the home-grown factor

Another major reason why Gordon has to be on Liverpool’s to-do list this summer is because of his status as a home-grown player.

The Reds could really do with bolstering their English faction as soon as possible, and with Gordon ticking plenty of other boxes besides, he seems like an obvious choice to do that.

But it is not just for admin purposes that this is important. If his good friend Curtis Jones leaves, as seems wholly possible, Liverpool will be without a Scouser in their squad for the first time in decades.

Gordon would bring that connection that fans long for, and although his Everton past might make him slightly harder to warm to, he would no doubt give everything for the badge while playing for Liverpool.

As we have seen too many times this season, that is something that is currently lacking in this Liverpool squad. We need more players who will do whatever it takes to win with the Reds. Gordon would surely bring that.

HYPOTHETICAL: Liverpool can only have one local lad in the squad next season…

Who are you choosing and why? 👀

Everything is starting to fall into place

When Liverpool previously tried to sign Gordon back in 2024, it felt as though they did not have a huge need for another wide forward.

Luis Diaz’s future was uncertain, but he remained an important player for another year, while Cody Gakpo was never likely to leave.

On the other side of the pitch, Mohamed Salah was about to embark on the best season of his career, and it always looked a big ask for Gordon to force his way in.

Two years on, however, and this could hardly be more different. Diaz has gone, Gakpo is underperforming on an alarming scale, and Salah looks destined to leave.

Gordon can step into that as a big part of Liverpool’s attacking rebuild, and although he would not come cheap from Newcastle, he may even be attainable after a somewhat lukewarm season.

His lack of action in front of goal may have been enough to convince those Liverpool fans on the fence about him that Gordon is simply not of the standard to play for his boyhood club. But, as he showed once again during a big win on Saturday, he would just about tick all the boxes there are.
