Liverpool are expected to make changes to their centre-back department in 2026.

Whether in January or the summer, the futures of several players are up in the air.

At present, there has been no further progress with a deal for Ibrahima Konate, who is out of contract at the end of June 2026.

Elsewhere, both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are now in the final 18 months of their deals.

In turn, that currently means Giovanni Leoni will be the only senior central defender at Liverpool come 2027.

That’s obviously not going to be the case, but what should happen to the Reds’ current defensive options?

You’ve got £80m to fix Liverpool’s midfield this summer, who are you buying?

Liverpool fans think Joe Gomez should be sold

Well, we asked Liverpool fans what they would do with Konate, Van Dijk and Gomez moving forward.

And using Rousing The Kop’s TalkinPoints platform, many made it clear they think the latter of that trio should be moved on.

One fan wrote: “Keep Van Dijk, sell Gomez, let Konate go.”

“Hard to argue, just need to make sure at least two centre-backs are signed in the summer,” replied a second.

Another commented: “Need two new signings and let Gomez and Konate go.”

A fourth stated: “Assuming Konate is going on a free, Gomez should be sold this summer and the club should assess Van Dijk’s situation this time next year.”

Meanwhile, both Marc Guehi and Micky van de Ven have been named as ideal centre-back replacements.

“Guehi is the top priority. If we get him, then Gomez and Konate can go, should also get a bit of money for them!” wrote a fifth.

And another fan suggested: “Gomez out, Guehi and Van de Ven in, keep Konate ideally. Sounds like a lot of depth but we need to think like champions. Every year, there’s a centre-back crisis of some sort.”

Unpopular opinion: Peak Sadio Mane was better than peak Mohamed Salah…

People aren't ready for that discussion…

Gomez joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in 2015 and has played over 250 games for the club.

However, the Englishman has never really been used as a regular starter unless injuries have required it.

One recent report suggests that Gomez is expected to leave Liverpool before next season.

If that does happen, it probably means at least two new centre-backs, perhaps Guehi and Van de Ven, as one fan said, will need to be signed in the summer.

Liverpool’s interest in the Crystal Palace standout is already well-documented at this point.

Meanwhile, Van de Ven is thought to be unhappy at Tottenham. Could the Dutchman arrive at Anfield after previous links prior to his Spurs move? He would certainly add a lot of pace to the backline.
