Liverpool are poised to bolster their youth ranks with the signing of 17-year-old centre-back Ifeanyi Ndukwe.

The Reds are badly in need of some defensive reinforcements this January, but instead of making a first-team signing, they are ready to look towards the future instead.

Ndukwe’s addition may make a senior signing less likely, but Liverpool fans should be excited by his arrival all the same.

How excited are you by Liverpool’s move for Ifeanyi Ndukwe? 😃

The youngster will not arrive until the summer, and will reportedly begin life at Liverpool with the U21s. But there are already high hopes that Ndukwe could soon become a genuine option for Arne Slot’s first-team.

Ndukwe himself certainly seems to believe that to be the case. Speaking ahead of the U17 World Cup in October, the teenager predicted that he would be playing as a regular for Liverpool within five years.

This winter’s youth World Cup in Qatar appears to have been where Ndukwe really caught the eye of Liverpool’s scouts and convinced them to sign him.

But speaking in an interview with Austrian outlet Laola1 on October 6th, the towering defender made his feelings clear on a potential move to Anfield.

“My name is Ifeanyi Ndukwe. I’m a centre-back for Austria Vienna, and in five years I’ll be playing professionally in the Premier League,” he said.

Asked directly which club he would be playing for, Ndukwe did unfortunately mention Chelsea initially, but soon pivoted to the Reds.

“I don’t really have a favourite. But I’d say Chelsea… or Liverpool,” he replied.

Finally, Ndukwe was asked to name his footballing role model. Inevitably, he chose Liverpool captain – and soon-to-be teammate – Virgil van Dijk.

Ndukwe could be a Liverpool starter much sooner

In five years’ time Ndukwe will be only just approaching his 23rd birthday. By that stage, he could have been a Liverpool starter for some time already.

Although he will head straight into the U21s upon his arrival in Merseyside, the expectation appears to be that Ndukwe will be in and around the first-team in 2026/27.

From there, the pathway is currently fairly clear for him to truly establish himself within the senior set-up.

Alongside fellow youngster Giovanni Leoni, Ndukwe embodies an exciting future for the Liverpool defence in a post-Van Dijk world.

The Austrian may not get too many chances to play together with his idol, but it might ultimately be that Van Dijk’s exit, whenever that may be, opens the door for Ndukwe in the Liverpool XI. There’s a long way to go for that to happen, but a plan is starting to come together.
