Rousing The Kop readers react to exciting Joel Ordonez transfer news as Reds kick off January window

If Liverpool are to sign only one player this January transfer window, fans would love it to be a centre-back.

The Reds have been suspect defensively all season long, with Arne Slot having to rely on an out-of-form Ibrahima Konate and an overloaded Virgil van Dijk.

A new addition will surely arrive in 2026, and when Rousing The Kop asked fans on TalkingPoints to name their dream position to strengthen this winter, the result was overwhelmingly in favour of a new defender.

Liverpool can only sign ONE player this January, which position should they strengthen?

“I think we definitely need a CB but I’m not sure [Marc] Guehi is the man for the job,” said one fan. “I think Liverpool think the same otherwise they would have signed him by now instead of letting it drag on.”

“Would be stupid to not sign a CB, unless Wellity Lucky is extremely highly rated,” added another.

“Of course Guehi, we already saw the same CB duo a lot of times,” was someone else’s view.

While a mid-season move for Marc Guehi looks unlikely, reports on New Year’s Day brought claims that Liverpool are on the verge of signing another centre-back: Club Brugge’s Joel Ordonez. The suggestions from Ecuador are that Ordonez is almost a Liverpool player, but judging by RTK readers’ reactions, he is not the signing they were hoping for.

Liverpool supporters split over Joel Ordonez

Aged only 21, Ordonez is a very talented young defender with a high ceiling, and reacting on TalkingPoints, Liverpool supporters were happy to hear of his potential arrival.

“Really need a new defender in, Guehi would have been ideal but any fresh legs at this stage is a plus,” said one fan.

“He is desperately needed,” added another, with one more supporter suggesting he “can’t be worse than Konate.”

However, fans over on Facebook were not so positive, with plenty admitting they had never even heard of the Ecuadorian.

How happy would you be if Liverpool sign Joel Ordonez?

“Respectfully, I have no idea who that is,” said one fan, with one more simply posting: “Never heard of him…”

Others were more enthusiastic, but it’s fair to say that Ordonez’s potential arrival at Anfield has had a lukewarm reception at best.

“He is big, quick and hard as rock,” said one fan. “At least it’s something hopefully, we’ll get someone else as well,” added another.

“Great defender,” was one more supporters’ verdict, while another suggested Ordonez would be a “waste of money.” Mixed feelings from the Reds.

Ordonez claims begin to be refuted

Those Liverpool supporters not convinced by Ordonez were given a boost on Friday after several reporters refuted suggestions that he is on the way to Anfield.

Firstly, Liverpool patch journalist David Lynch said Reds insiders have played down talk of Ordonez joining, before Belgian reporter Sacha Tavolieri also claimed there has been no contact over the centre-back.

“At this moment, there has been no contact between Liverpool and Club Brugge regarding Joel Ordonez who does appear on a list of defenders appreciated by the scouting department,” Tavolieri posted on X.

“Situation to keep an eye on, as the relationship between the Blauw & Zwart and LFC’s excellent. Wait and see.”

With Liverpool only just kicking off the month-long January window, there appears to be a way to run on this story yet.
