Marc Guehi is a name that will be mentioned a lot throughout January as the defender enters the final six months of his contract.
The winter transfer window is almost upon us and for Liverpool, they might be fairly active despite a big summer of spending.
They still need a few additions if they are to get completely back on track, with at least one new defender required.
Liverpool can only sign ONE player this January, which position should they strengthen?
Guehi is still their number one priority, but it is unclear whether they will make a move for him next month or in the summer, although the latter seems more likely.
How the player himself is feeling, though, will be a telling sign of where his head is at, and with Real Madrid sniffing around, it might not be good news for the Reds.
Marc Guehi would give ‘priority’ to Real Madrid after initial contact
With Guehi set to be a free agent in just six months time, he really is not short of suitors and has the pick of the bunch.
Liverpool were still seen as the frontrunners, though, although that might all be about to change according to Spanish outlet AS.
They report that Real Madrid have informed his representatives that they are interested in signing him and that they will make further contact should they wish to proceed.
They are said to want to see how the season progresses, both in terms of their own need for a centre-back and how Guehi performs, so it is unlikely he will move mid-season.
What changes does Arne Slot need to make to the team he fielded last time out vs Leeds?
Things really didn't go to plan that day…
AS report that Guehi will give ‘absolute priority’ to Real Madrid should they make further contact, meaning Liverpool look like they do not stand much of a chance.
Liverpool should move on from Marc Guehi unless he has promised to join
With Guehi one of the best in the Premier League, it is no surprise that all the top teams from around Europe want him, especially as it would cost them nothing in terms of a transfer fee.
However, this only strengthens the player’s position and makes it hard for the Reds to compete, with it clear that he is not 100% sold on a move to Anfield.
Usually if a player hesitates, Liverpool would simply move on, so the same should probably happen in this case unless there is some sort of gentleman’s agreement in place.
As seen many times in the past, if Madrid come calling, they almost always get their man, and it sounds like the same will happen again if they wish to pursue Liverpool’s top target.
