Liverpool are likely to be eyeing any potential deals they can snatch from Wolves as the Midlands club prepare for an inevitable Premier League relegation.

The Old Gold have only two points after 18 matches – the lowest amount in the history of the Premier League.

As a result, clubs across the country will be looking at some transfer opportunities at Molineux, with the likes of Joao Gomes and Jorgen Strand Larsen set to be the most in-demand.

However, while Gomes could be on Liverpool‘s radar, the Reds’ should instead be getting themselves to the front of the queue for young forward Mateus Mane.

Supporters had front row seats to Mane’s first Premier League start at Anfield on Saturday, and the 18-year-old should have instantly put himself into the sights’ of Liverpool scouts.

Mateus Mane looked like a future Liverpool player

Very few Liverpool fans will have been aware of Mane before Saturday’s match. If they looked up his age during or after the game, they must have got a shock.

The youngster was Wolves’ best player all match, constantly looking for the ball and aiming to hurt Liverpool with it.

His performance was one of a Premier League veteran, not someone making his very first steps in senior football.

“Mane I thought was excellent throughout the game, so him moving inside then caused them a lot of problems, and we found him a lot in between the lines, and he was able to create,” manager Rob Edwards said after the game.

“I thought his energy was brilliant, his running was brilliant, but he was brave; he took the ball; he was a real shining light in what was obviously a difficult period for the club at the moment.

“He took risks, he had shots, he dribbled, he turned and played forward. But not only that, he showed real desire to run and fight as well.”

Which Wolves player should Liverpool look to sign if they are relegated?

Mane’s Anfield statement was only his eighth appearance for Wolves and his first in the starting XI. Judging by what he delivered on Merseyside, many, many more will be to come.

One first-half breakaway in which Mane turned Milos Kerkez inside out before firing a long distance effort over the bar was particularly impressive, while the teenager had a further three shots during the game.

When Wolves are eventually relegated, perhaps a season in the Championship would be the best thing for Mane’s development. But whether he stays at Molineux or moves on, it would be a surprise if Liverpool were not now watching his every move.

Who is Mateus Mane?

A flying winger with pace and skill, Mane was signed from Rochdale in February 2024.

Originally from Portugal, the talented youngster moved to England with his parents as a nine-year-old, before joining Rochdale’s youth ranks.

After breaking into the Wolves first team last season, Mane signed a new contract at Molineux in July this year.

The forward is also an England U18 international, having rejected a call-up from Portugal and chosen to play for his adopted country.

After what he produced at Anfield this weekend, we suspect we’ll be hearing plenty more of Mateus Mane over the coming years.
