Alexander Isak explains what’s been happening in training to ‘build connections’ with Liverpool forwards

Alexander Isak’s difficult start to life at Liverpool continued this week with a non-existent performance against Sunderland.

The Swede scored his first Premier League goal for the Reds with a beautifully taken finish last weekend at West Ham, but could not back it up with another one.

There have been worries over how much Isak is getting involved in Liverpool‘s build-up, after he registered only 14 touches during Wednesday’s match against Sunderland.

Isak has looked on a different wavelength to his Liverpool teammates at times, with nobody quite knowing how to get the best from the No. 9.

Clearly, this has to improve, and while speaking to Sky Sports, Isak has opened up on how he and his new teammates are trying to turn things around in training.

Despite his lack of form, you would struggle to find a Liverpool supporter who is pinning that all on Isak himself.

Instead, the issue seems to stem from his teammates not being able to get the ball to him in the right areas.

Alan Shearer has urged Liverpool players to look for Isak more, and according to the man himself, this is something they are working hard to correct on the training pitch.

“You work on it every chance you get,” he said. “Obviously it’s not every day but that’s normal in training. When you get the chance you’re just training with each other, building up connections and it’s getting better. That’s my feeling.”

Asked for how the ‘senior players’ at Liverpool have been with him since he arrived, Isak insisted that there was absolutely no problem there.

Arne Slot has ‘no doubt’ Isak will come good

As Isak has struggled, some of the blame has fallen at the feet of Arne Slot. The Liverpool head coach does not appear to be building his team around getting the best out of his record signing.

But speaking ahead of Saturday’s trip to face Leeds United, Slot insisted that Isak will come good eventually.

“If a player starts in the middle of a season and his fitness level is not as high as the others and we have three games a week so there is hardly any time to train, it does take time for any player to get to the levels we want,” he said via The Daily Mail.

“But I have no doubt that eventually he will become the player we signed him to be. Sometimes, like last week, he has already shown it.”

Clearly, supporters need to start seeing that far more often than they currently are. But Saturday is another day, and another chance for Isak and his teammates to put their work on the training pitch into action.
