Ibrahima Konate has had a season to forget for Liverpool, transforming from one of the best centre-backs in Europe into a walking liability.

The Frenchman’s downturn in form has played out against the backdrop of a contract saga which has threatened to tarnish his legacy with the Reds.

Until Friday, it had been widely assumed that Konate was heading to join Real Madrid, following the same path trodden by Trent Alexander-Arnold last summer.

However, news has since arrived that Real Madrid are not interested in Konate and are hugely unlikely to be signing the Liverpool centre-back in 2026.

What this means for Konate’s future at Anfield remains to be seen. But after hearing news that his Madrid move is almost certain to be off, Liverpool supporters have taken to social media in their droves.

Liverpool supporters show there may be no way back for Ibrahima Konate

Konate has been an easy scapegoat for supporters to pin the woes of the season on. However, it is true that he has been dreadfully under-par throughout the campaign so far.

At times his attitude has been called into question, and fans on X have clearly had enough of this version of Konate.

“Konate should be really ashamed of himself,” said one supporter. “He has risked his entire relationship with Liverpool fans just because he wanted to go to Madrid and now he has been so bad this season that Real Madrid isn’t even interested anymore.”

“The club should now offer Konate revised and reduced terms on any contract extension,” said another. “You reap what you sow. His head was turned and he let it impact in terms of his attitude & performances on the pitch. Nobody would shed tears if he left, but he’d need replacing obviously.”

“Said it all along, why on earth would they want him anyway. He’s woeful,” one more weighed in. “But he’ll probably end up at PSG on a free [back to his homeland] Lucky boy. So error prone.”

Can Ibrahima Konate’s relationship with Liverpool fans be repaired?

“Real Madrid reportedly not interested in Konate anymore. Wouldn’t give him a new contract either.,” someone else added, with another insisting that the France international “get lost” after “flirting with Madrid and losing his head.”

Others poked fun at the manner in which the story had emerged, suggesting that Konate is so bad, even a free transfer was unappealing to Madrid.

“Rejecting signing him on a free is crazy,” said one fan, “Getting in contact with another club to let them know you’re not interested in their player is pretty funny,” added another.

“Why would you tell a club you’re not signing a player that would be leaving on a free?” someone else queried. “He’s clearly been dying for that move…he’ll probably try and go to PSG now.”

Is there a way back for Konate at Liverpool?

Reading Liverpool fans’ comments about Konate, and you could easily feel as though those supporters are being harsh with the centre-back, but the truth is that Konate has been playing as though his head has been elsewhere.

Some of his public comments about his contract situation have been questionable at best and when you couple that with terrible performances, fans are always going to be upset.

Despite that, there has been more than enough evidence over the years that Konate is a player worthy of being in the Liverpool starting XI.

If he does sign a new contract and stay, then Reds fans will hope to see that form return once again.

It may not feel like it just now, and supporters are obviously hurt, but if an extension is agreed and Konate’s form returns, this will all simply feel like a bad dream. There is a way back here, and it just got one step closer.
