Why Liverpool fans should ignore rumours they’re signing Antoine Semenyo in January

Antoine Semenyo has been the talk of the town recently, with Liverpool linked with a potential move for the Bournemouth attacker.

The Ghanaian has been one of the Premier League’s most in-form players since the 2025-26 season kicked off, with his goals often single-handedly earning Andoni Iraola’s men points.

So, with this in mind, it’s hardly a surprise to see teams such as Liverpool and Tottenham being interested in acquiring his services.

However, talk of a move only emerged once it was shared that the attacker had a £75 million release clause in his contract.

Otherwise, the Cherries would likely demand too much for their star man, with journalist Dean Jones now sharing an update on his future.

Antoine Semenyo’s release clause won’t be active in January, ruling out an early Liverpool move

Semenyo would be an impressive signing on the Reds’ behalf, but since they already have Mohamed Salah and Federico Chiesa among their ranks, it would be difficult for Liverpool to find a good balance with their playing time.

Each player deserves a place in Arne Slot’s starting XI, and even though Chiesa hasn’t had the most game time yet, when he has been chosen, he’s more than proven his worth.

Admittedly, Semenyo is in better form than the aforementioned duo at the moment, but, as per a new update from Jones via TEAMtalk, it seems like a move will have to wait until summer if Liverpool want to activate his release clause.

“I don’t think he will leave in January because from my current understanding of the situation, the clause in his contract would not be live at that stage,” he said.

“I also don’t believe Bournemouth have any interest in allowing it to happen in that moment.

“The update out of Bournemouth remains that the player is satisfied with his status because of their strong start to the season, but of course, that does not mean he will not look to change things long-term.

“In terms of the figures around his clause, they are continuing to remain secretive around it, but I was told recently that it is in the mid-60s. So we will have to wait and see on that.

“It is unconfirmed at this stage and there also remains a lack of clarity around when the clause would even kick in, so the situation is going to linger for a while.”

Liverpool have more important areas to focus their recruitment on

Although Liverpool’s attack has been a concern this season, they’ve already spent well over £200 million trying to improve it in the summer.

At the moment, only Hugo Ekitike is really looking anything like on form for the Reds. However, they have talent in abundance and players who are likely to eventually come good.

As a result, shelling out another big fee on someone like Semenyo would feel like a poor use of funds.

The Ghanaian has been in good form this season, but there is an argument that he would not be an improvement on Cody Gakpo, and would further block the progress of Rio Ngumoha.

A move may yet come to fruition next summer but for now, Liverpool need to put their focus in other areas.
