Adam Wharton says it’s ‘pretty obvious’ what’s happening with Marc Guehi amid Liverpool speculation

Marc Guehi’s future has been one of the main talking points of the season, with Liverpool just hours away from signing him on deadline day.

In the end, it wasn’t meant to be, with Steve Parish choosing to keep the Englishman at Crystal Palace due to the Eagles taking part in their first European campaign.

At the moment, it’s working out well for them as Guehi has once again been one of the Premier League’s best centre-backs.

However, since his contract is set to expire at the end of the 2025-26 season and he doesn’t look likely to sign an extension, the defender is likely to be available for free at the end of the term.

This seems to be the way things are headed with Crystal Palace ace Adam Wharton now making an admission about the future of his teammate.

Adam Wharton admits that Marc Guehi won’t sign a new deal at Crystal Palace

Since Guehi is now 25 years old and has plenty of top-flight experience under his belt, he’s going to want to play for a team that can regularly compete for the Premier League and the Champions League.

He’s one of England’s best centre-backs at the moment, and the fact that this term is the first that he’s properly played in a European competition is rather mind-boggling.

So with this in mind, it isn’t a surprise to see Wharton admit that his teammate won’t be extending his contract at Selhurst Park beyond the end of the season.

“There’s obviously so much speculation. I think it’s pretty obvious. I think it came out that he wasn’t going to sign a new deal,” he said on The Athletic FC Podcast.

“So yeah, I think obviously, he’s a top defender. You’ve seen it week in, week out. And apparently, he’s seen it at the Euros and after that for England.

“So I mean, he’s so consistent. You see it in training. Well, I see it in training every day as well.

“So down to earth as well. He never gets carried away. And yeah, he could literally go to any club in the world for me and be starting comfortably.

“It’s probably just where he goes. And when if he goes in January or in the summer, who knows? I hope he stays until so we can have him for a bit longer.”

Liverpool must do everything in their power to sign Marc Guehi over the next few months

Guehi is arguably the perfect centre-back target for Liverpool.

The defender is homegrown, which will help with the Reds’ quota, and he’s also played plenty of Premier League football, so theoretically, there shouldn’t be any sort of transitional phase for him.

If Liverpool were to sign Guehi in January, they’d likely want to pay a minimal fee for him, especially since they’d be able to sign him for nothing by the summer.

He’d likely fit straight into Arne Slot’s starting XI and would instantly improve their chances of retaining the Premier League title and perhaps even winning the Champions League.

If they somehow let the Englishman fall through the cracks and join another team, such as Bayern Munich or Real Madrid, it’ll be a massive mistake on their part and will likely cause fans to ask many questions.

It’s now or never for the Anfield outfit, and to be honest, it doesn’t feel like an opportunity as good as this one will crop up any time soon.
