Wayne Rooney has been critical of Liverpool this season, but he has now labelled one of Arne Slot’s summer signings as ‘brilliant’

Rooney questioned Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk earlier this season, prompting the latter to respond.

After the weekend’s Manchester City game, the former Manchester United striker was critical of Salah’s defensive work as well.

Now, though, he has actually been positive about one of Liverpool’s new additions.

Wayne Rooney praises Liverpool summer signing Hugo Ekitike

Rooney appeared on the latest episode of The Overlap Fan Debate.

When doing so, he was asked to give quick-fire summaries of several signings.

One of them was Hugo Ekitike, who joined from Eintracht Frankfurt over the summer.

On the Frenchman, Rooney said: “Brilliant. I love watching him [Ekitike] play.”

The striker has six goals to his name so far this season, but Liverpool fans think Ekitke’s form has dropped off recently.

There was a suggestion that the reason for the dip is due to Alexander Isak’s absence.

But that will likely be changing after the November international break.

Will Hugo Ekitike be dropped for Alexander Isak

Isak cost Liverpool a British transfer record, but he’s been forced to miss a good chunk of the season so far due to the transfer saga with Newcastle United and fitness issues.

However, the striker made the bench against Manchester City on Sunday on the back of his return to training this past Friday.

Slot thinks Isak and Ekitike could play together, but it would mean playing the Frenchman as a winger or as a number 10.

Jamie Carragher has concerns about fitting both players into the starting eleven, and it will be interesting to see what the Liverpool boss does once the current break is over and the Reds have to take on Nottingham Forest.
