Xabi Alonso shares who his best friend at Liverpool was during his time at Anfield

Xabi Alonso has admitted that Jamie Carragher was his best friend when he played for Liverpool.

The Spaniard is one of the most iconic Liverpool midfielders to have played for the club over the last 20 years or so, as he managed to form an impeccable partnership with Steven Gerrard; however, it was Carragher who he was closest with.

The former Bayer Leverkusen boss will forever be a Liverpool legend, especially since he was part of the Reds’ squad during the miracle of Istanbul in 2005.

Whenever he donned the Red of Liverpool, he always put in the maximum amount of effort, and even though he chose to exit Anfield for Real Madrid, he left with the blessing of the fans.

He’s the manager of Los Blancos, and speaking after their 1-0 win over Juventus, he admitted that he thought Carragher was “the best Scouser in the world.”

Although it’s now been a fair few years since Alonso and Carragher hung up their boots, they’re still massive names in the world of football.

Carragher is now one of the most well-known pundits in England, while Alonso is managing one of the biggest teams in the world.

They played alongside one another for around five years at Liverpool, and in that time, it seems like Carragher had a massive impact on Alonso.

“Yes, it’s true [Jamie Carragher is Xabi Alonso’s best friend],” Alonso said to CBS Sports.

“[It’s] very true, we were five years in Liverpool, he was for me at that moment the best scouser in the world.

“So he’s a great friend of mine with Stevie G, so we’ve had great years.

“He’s very popular now I see him on TV.”

As mentioned, Alonso’s impact on Liverpool when playing for the club was second to none.

He’s arguably one of the best defensive midfielders that the Anfield outfit have ever had, with the likes of Didi Hamann and Javier Mascherano also deserving a mention.

Even though Alonso was only with Liverpool for five years, he’s forever remembered by fans as one of the best to do it.

At the moment, Arne Slot has Ryan Gravenberch at his disposal, and although he’s nowhere near the level Alonso reached yet, he’s arguably one of the best defensive midfielders in the world.

If he continues on this path, there’s no reason why he couldn’t eclipse the Spaniard and perhaps develop an even stronger relationship with Virgil van Dijk than Alonso seemingly had with Carragher.
