Fabrizio Romano reveals ‘most likely’ transfer solution for Liverpool target Marc Guehi

Liverpool supporters have decided that the signing of Marc Guehi would have prevented the current slump their team is facing.

The Reds have lost four games in succession following Sunday’s defeat against Manchester United, with the defence looking all at sea throughout that run.

Ibrahima Konate has had a difficult season despite an improved display on Sunday, while Virgil van Dijk has been unable to hold things together alone.

In the meantime, Guehi has been excelling for Crystal Palace and England, underlining exactly why Liverpool pushed hard to sign him on transfer deadline day.

Last week it was revealed by Palace boss Oliver Glasner that Guehi had told his club that he absolutely would not be signing a new contract at Selhurst Park.

With his current deal set to run until the summer of 2026, journalist Fabrizio Romano has explained what is most likely to happen with Guehi and where Liverpool stand.

Marc Guehi expected to leave on a free transfer

Had Liverpool been able to push through a deal for Guehi, he would surely have been in the starting XI by now.

Konate’s form has tailed off alarmingly, meaning the England international could have offered a steadying alternative.

Liverpool could of course have the chance to reignite their move for Guehi when the January window opens, and although he confirms that this may be a possibility, Romano says a summer exit is much more likely for the defender.

“There is now the official confirmation from Oliver Glasner, Marc Guehi has decided and communicated to Crystal Palace that he’s not going to sign a new contract with the club. He will leave in 2026,” the transfer expert told his YouTube channel.

“The most likely solution, from what I’m hearing, is on a free transfer next summer rather than in the January transfer window. That’s the feeling for Guehi. We never know what can happen in January, but the intention is to go on a free.

“Liverpool are still interested in Marc Guehi, but they are not the only club. There are several clubs in Spain, Germany, Italy. It’s going to be an open race. Liverpool and Guehi was a done deal on deadline day but then it collapsed. Liverpool are still interested but nothing is done. So, we have to see what will happen.”

Liverpool must make a January signing in defence

If it is next summer that Guehi leaves, Liverpool will certainly have a great deal of competition to get him. But there is a strong chance that they cannot wait that long.

Arne Slot has looked absolutely unwilling to put his trust in Joe Gomez so far this season, but that will have to change in the coming weeks.

Konate cannot play every match, and with only Gomez to fall back on, nervous times could be ahead.

Neither of the two Liverpool defenders have brilliant injury records, and a problem for either ahead of January could be fatal for the Reds’ chances of silverware.

A January signing to ease this pressure is an absolute must. The chances are that this will not be Guehi, but Liverpool need to make a decisive move before going all in for the Palace man next summer regardless.
