Michael Owen says there’s reason for Liverpool fans to be positive despite fourth consecutive defeat

Liverpool supporters are experiencing something for the first time in almost 11 years after suffering a fourth defeat in succession.

The Reds had not lost four on the bounce since November 2014, when the Reds hit a slump under Brendan Rodgers.

Having lost to their biggest rivals at Anfield on Sunday, the defeat will sting even more for Liverpool fans.

With losses starting to become commonplace under Arne Slot, there is very, very little for those fans to be positive about just now.

They are still not so far from the top of the Premier League table, but playing the way they are, they can forget about winning silverware this term.

Nevertheless, there were some better moments during Sunday’s game, with former Liverpool striker Michael Owen keen to give supporters some hope for the coming weeks.

Michael Owen praises Liverpool despite defeat

Liverpool need to find a way to get back to something like their best. Sunday felt like the perfect springboard to do that, but a defeat can similarly make things feel even worse.

Arguably even worse than the losses have been the performances from Slot’s team, and there were some more worrying signs in that regard at Anfield.

There were some better moments mixed in with that, though, with Owen keen to highlight the amount of chances Liverpool created across the 90 minutes.

“It was a fantastic game for the neutral. Lots of chances. Second half, Liverpool were really dominant. And when they scored you thought ‘here we go’,” Owen told premierleague.com.

“A lot of people are going to look at this record, and think ‘four games, four defeats, what’s going wrong at Liverpool?’ and I suppose you’re right to ask that question, but when you watch their performance there today, it doesn’t smell of a team that are really out of form and playing badly.

“They’re creating so many chances. Manchester United, full credit to them. I’d give them more credit than I’d be critical of Liverpool, I thought they played pretty well there today.”

Liverpool must be more clinical

While it may be difficult to see at that moment, Owen is right about Liverpool’s display on Sunday.

This was not a game where the Reds were outplayed for large periods. In terms of xG, Liverpool hit 2.76, far more than United’s 1.26.

Put simply, Liverpool need to start putting away their chances. It can make all the difference at the moment.

The biggest guilty party on Sunday was Gakpo, who despite his goal, missed a clear sitter to bring the game back to 2-2.

Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak also missed golden opportunities which on another day could have gone in. Plenty needs to change to get Liverpool back to winning ways, but it starts with putting the ball in the net.
