Despite plenty of transfer activity in 2025, Liverpool still look in need of some fine-tuning.
The Reds arguably added too much to their squad during the summer window, and are now left trying to fit the pieces of the puzzle together.
The spending splurge offered a marked change of approach from Liverpool‘s usual method, with fans delighting in the vast transfer sums being paid out.
However, the Liverpool owners have not suddenly decided to become frivolous with their cash after a decade of careful and sustainable spending.
As a result, fans may now be expecting a lean year or two in the transfer market as they tighten their belts.
According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, while this is likely to be the case, that will not stop Liverpool from making at least two key additions to the team in 2026.

Liverpool will target a centre-back and wide forward
The clear area of improvement within the Liverpool squad right now is at centre-back.
Liverpool have been linked relentlessly with Marc Guehi ever since failing to buy him in the summer, but there are likely to be many other suitors for the Crystal Palace captain in the summer.
Taking to X on Friday afternoon, Plettenberg confirms that Guehi is still in Liverpool’s sights, but also puts forward Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano as an option.
According to the German reporter, the Reds are also on the search for a ‘top winger’ after selling Luis Diaz this year.
“At Liverpool, there is currently a very relaxed outlook regarding the next two transfer windows,” says Plettenberg. “Adjustments will be made, but not on the same scale as this past summer.”
“For the centre-back position, Marc Guehi and Dayot Upamecano are among the candidates. In addition, the club are still searching for a top winger.”
What other positions could Liverpool target?
As well as centre-back, there is an obvious gap at left wing for Liverpool this season. However, there is a chance Slot could remedy this with his use of Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak.
Either way, it is not hard to see why Liverpool would think they need another forward to add to the roster.
On top of that, midfield is another area which could be due some attention at Anfield in 2026.
Come the summer, it will be three years since Liverpool completely revamped their midfield, signing four players in 2023. It could be high time to make a new addition.
Addressing these three areas could come at significant cost to Liverpool, but it is clear that the spending will not touch the £400m+ outlay of this year.
