Ally McCoist says one Liverpool player has been worse than he ever thought possible this season

It has been a tough finish before the international break for Liverpool after their loss to Chelsea.

Arne Slot’s team have found themselves in an unusual position with three consecutive losses across all competitions, which has not happened to them before under the Dutchman’s reign.

There have been issues throughout the Liverpool squad since the beginning of the season, but it was masked by the fact that they were able to put together a winning streak early on.

They have had many of their issues in defence, with individual mistakes and a lack of cohesion leading to more goals being conceded than expected by the Reds.

However, there have also been problems up front for the squad, with the Reds struggling to find their best front three, and some of them not performing to their usual standards.

Ally McCoist cannot believe Mohamed Salah’s poor form

One of those attackers is Mohamed Salah, who has not been his usual imperious self since the start of this season after coming off his best individual year at the club since joining in 2017.

The Chelsea game saw the Egyptian face more criticism than he is used to after Salah was unable to influence the game, and the chances he had were squandered.

While he has not been at his usual greatness, the squad have not helped his case, given that he has struggled to even get the ball in most games or have someone to work a move into the box.

It is this slight drop in form that has some worried, and Ally McCoist picked up on the displays of the ‘Egyptian King’ which he admits have not been to his usual standard.

During a talkSPORT broadcast, the Scotsman said: “If there’s anyone out there on the planet that probably deserves to be cut a little bit of slack for not maintaining the form that he’s shown us for years and years, because he has been sensational, he has been fantastic.

“But you’re absolutely right, Cascarino is right, we’re all right, it’s happening in front of our eyes, there’s been, not just a kind of dropping form, I think the problem is there’s been a dramatic dropping form… I mean, it’s actually really surprising to see. I think the drop in his overall play, I didn’t think he was capable of giving that level of performance.

“Of course he can, and by the way, even though he’s having a bad game, he’s been a genius, he has been an absolute genius.

“I think there’s an element because he’s not firing just now, he’s actually become a little bit of a victim of his own standards.”

Mohamed Salah’s performances reflect Liverpool’s season

It has been a drop in form, which was not necessarily expected after his previously incredible season, but if anything, it is indicative of how the team has been playing as a whole.

There are complaints that Salah is not doing enough defensively to track back and help out; however, the defenders in those full-back positions have been struggling with that most of the season, so it should not be on him as an attacker to come back.

His decision-making and passing have also fallen short of the mark, and this is something that can be said about our midfield or defence throughout games this season.

It cannot be expected that Salah does everything, given that the squad as a whole is not holding up their end of the bargain.

The performances of Salah are just a reflection of the squad as a whole, and when the general play of the whole team improves, so will his.
