Liverpool fans will finally get a proper look at Giorgi Mamardashvili in the coming weeks as he prepares for a run in the team.

The former Valencia goalkeeper has been patiently waiting for his chance at Anfield ever since joining in August 2024.

Having sat on the bench for the opening weeks of the season, Mamardashvili is set to be the beneficiary of an injury to Alisson Becker.

Alisson is set to miss around six weeks, giving his understudy a chance during what is a difficult-looking period in the Premier League and Champions League.

Plenty is expected of Mamardashvili, but there will be a learning curve for Liverpool fans as they work out exactly what kind of goalkeeper the 25-year-old is.

Ahead of his Premier League debut, assistant manager of the Georgia national team, Englishman David Webb, has aimed to fill in some of the blanks, comparing Mamardashvili to Manchester City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Alisson and Mamardashvili are obviously different goalkeepers, and from early impressions, the Georgian also looks a little removed from the style Caoimhin Kelleher brought.

Webb is someone well-placed to comment on that, having seen Mamardashvili become a star for his country over recent years.

And according to the coach, Liverpool’s No. 25 can be compared to Donnarumma in terms of both size and the commanding nature of their performances.

“Giorgi is not at Alisson’s level yet, but he is only getting better. He is commanding,” Webb tells The Daily Mail.

“When you look at someone like Gianluigi Donnarumma, he is massive, has the presence and is an outstanding shot-stopper. You can make comparisons.

“He (Mamardashvili) is very clear in what he wants,” he adds. “He knew he wanted to play in the Premier League when at Valencia. He knows he won’t be first-choice yet, but if opportunities present themselves he needs to be ready.”

No time for Mamardashvili teething problems

As we’ve seen with big-money new signings such as Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak this season, it can sometimes take new players a while to gel with their teammates on the pitch.

However, for a goalkeeper, there can be none of that settling-in period. The facts are that if Mamardashvili makes mistakes, Liverpool will concede goals and likely lose games.

The goalie must be switched on throughout, and on top of this difficult task, Mamardashvili is walking into a really tough set of fixtures for Liverpool.

The Reds will face Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Real Madrid before Alisson is likely to be back, giving the stand-in a real test of his credentials.

It could be a baptism of fire for the new boy, but on the flip side, if he can impress, he could secure his future as Liverpool’s long-term number one.
