Wesley Fofana says that Liverpool have a player who’s so good it’s ‘crazy’

Liverpool have been one of the Premier League’s most dominant teams for some time now.

And, even though it was only Arne Slot’s first season in charge of the Reds, he still managed to bring the top-flight title to Anfield.

Liverpool cruised to the title with the Anfield outfit ending the season 10 points clear of second-placed Arsenal.

However, most of this wouldn’t be possible unless Liverpool had some of the best players in the world.

And, while talking about his defensive idols, Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana admitted that Virgil van Dijk was a “crazy” player.

Fofana has had a hard time of it since joining Chelsea from Leicester.

The centre-back almost instantly got injured during his start to life as a Blues player, with the Frenchman only really getting back into contention this season.

Enzo Maresca has several centre-back options among his ranks now due to the sheer amount of money that Chelsea have spent, but on the face of things, it’s clear that Fofana is one of their best options.

And, while speaking about his defensive idols, the Frenchman was full of praise for Liverpool’s Van Dijk.

“[Sergio] Ramos is crazy,” he said. “In my generation, Van Dijk is crazy, Thiago [Silva] is incredible like [Raphael] Varane, for me, I’m French, he’s incredible, but for me, [Paolo] Maldini is the best.”

Although it’s been made clear that Van Dijk is still Liverpool’s best centre-back, that doesn’t mean he’s going to stay after his contract expires in 2027.

At the moment, the Dutchman is Liverpool’s strongest centre-back by a country mile, but with talk of Marc Guehi and Dayot Upamecano making the move to Anfield, plans about the future of Van Dijk could change in an instant.

Of course, Liverpool also have to worry about the future of Ibrahima Konate as he’s also in the final year of his deal.

If Konate doesn’t extend his stay and does choose to leave, there would be much more need for Slot to keep Van Dijk around for another season, especially since Giovanni Leoni will have only just returned from injury.

At the moment, it’s anyone’s guess what could happen, but if these are the Dutchman’s final couple of years with Liverpool, he needs to make them count.
