Liverpool fans are all joking that ‘fantastic’ former player should now return to prevent injury crisis

Liverpool have started off their Premier League season in the best way possible.

The Reds have won all five of their top-flight games so far, with the club becoming the team to beat once again.

However, even though they also beat Southampton in the third round of the Carabao Cup, the main story that emerged from the game was Giovanni Leoni’s injury.

The centre-back made his long-awaited debut for the Anfield outfit against the Saints, and although he had a rather impressive game, the fact that Leoni managed to tear his ACL was a massive blow.

So, since they now only have three senior centre-backs at their disposal, fans have taken to X to share their thoughts on potentially bringing Joel Matip out of retirement to be the Reds’ fourth-choice.

Liverpool fans jokingly say that Joel Matip should make a return to Anfield

Throughout the summer transfer window, it was clear that Liverpool wanted to reinforce their back line.

Fortunately, they managed to do this with Leoni, but if they also managed to get Marc Guehi over the line, the Italian’s injury wouldn’t even be that much of an issue.

However, now that he has been ruled out for almost a year, questions about who Liverpool’s fourth-choice centre-back is have emerged, with fans even hinting that they’d like to see Matip make a return.

One fan wrote: “Get him in!” While another added: “I’d even spend my last cent to witness this.”

A third then said: “This would be unreal.”

A fifth said: “Yes I’m dead serious.”

Another even mentioned signing 35-year-old Craig Dawson by saying: “Give him or Craig Dawson a ring.”

A seventh admitted it would be “A homecoming for the ages!”

Liverpool should be fine without signing a new centre-back until the summer transfer window

Although Matip was dubbed a “fantastic” player by Jamie Carragher during his time with Liverpool, it feels like a bit of a stretch to say that Liverpool should sign him as a stopgap this season.

The centre-back has been retired ever since he left Liverpool, and seeing as though he has no forms of social media or anything like that, it’s unclear what he’s actually up to these days.

There have been talks of Liverpool even reigniting their interest in Guehi during the January transfer window due to Leoni’s injury, but as long as Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk all stay fit, everything should be fine.

As for Liverpool’s fourth-choice centre-back for the rest of the campaign, both Wataru Endo and Andy Robertson can fill in if needed.

At the moment, it doesn’t feel like there’s any need for fans to panic, especially with the form that Slot’s men have been in this season.
