Andy Robertson did not hesitate when asked which former Liverpool teammate he associated most with the Champions League.
The competition returned to Anfield last night in style with an entertainingly dramatic game of football against Atletico Madrid, which ended with a Virgil van Dijk header in the 96th minute to seal a 3-2 victory for the Reds.
It was a game that had everything: two early goals from the home side, a Madrid comeback through Marcos Llorente, a red card to Diego Simeone, and another last-minute winner – what more could you ask for?
This is a tournament that Liverpool were meant to be a part of, with the high drama, fast-paced action, and quality play all around, it is one of the parts of the season that supporters look forward to most.
The history of the club in this competition is storied with the infamous night in Istanbul, winning back-to-back titles in the 70s, and a sixth Champions League crown in 2019 after 14 years without one.

It was the latter team that Robertson was famously a part of, which brought European glory back to Merseyside in one of the most dramatic campaigns in the club’s history when it came to the late stages of the competition.
The win was most famous for one of the best nights at Liverpool’s feared ground, where 3-0 down on aggregate, Jurgen Klopp’s men led an extraordinary comeback to win 4-3 with goals from Gini Wijnaldum and Divock Origi.
It is one of those moments as a fan you do not forget, and the victory in Madrid, thanks to a Mohamed Salah penalty and an Origi goal to secure the accolade against Tottenham Hotspur.
In history, the European Cup has been the place where legends are made, and there are a plethora of stars who you could associate with the tournament.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, Lionel Messi, or Ronaldo Nazario are just a select few who are linked with the competition, and they were names that the Liverpool squad brought up as the players they most associated with the Champions League.
In a TikTok with DAZN Arabia, the players picked some iconic names from the tournament, and Robertson could not help but pick a man he lined up alongside as the most synonymous with it.
Without hesitation, he said: “Divock Origi.”
His status as a cult figure in the club cannot be overstated for what he did not only during the campaign to win his side the semi-final and final, but also for his time scoring late winners in the Premier League.

While he never needed to score any more than those three strikes to help win the campaign, it is a slight surprise that he only ever scored one other goal for the club in the Champions League.
He scored in an away group stage game against his current club, AC Milan, and even though Liverpool got to the final, it was not meant to be when they lost 1-0 to Real Madrid.
Origi’s career at Liverpool is an odd one, but he is a part of the tapestry of this club and in years to come will be looked back upon as one of our great cult heroes.
