Liverpool beat Atletico Madrid 3-2 in their Champions League clash on Wednesday evening.

The Reds managed to score two quick-fire goals against Diego Simeone’s men, which instantly set them apart from their opponents.

And, even though Atletico conceded two early goals, that didn’t stop them from sitting with 11 men behind the ball for most of the game.

Indeed, they did bag themselves a couple of goals in the Champions League clash, which meant that Liverpool once again left it until the last minute to seal a win.

By the end of the game, Liverpool were more than deserving winners, with the performance of one of the Reds’ players particularly pleasing Ally McCoist.

Mohamed Salah’s “magnificent” goal leaves Ally McCoist in awe

Mohamed Salah may have had a bit of a slower start to the 2025-26 season than he’d have wanted, but after his last two games for Liverpool, it seems like he’s getting back to his best.

The Egyptian King was one of the Reds’ most creative players on Wednesday, with the 33-year-old even showing glimpses of the player he was last season.

Indeed, the fact that Dominik Szoboszlai was moved back into the midfield likely helped him out a lot due to the creative nature of the Hungarian, but the main thing is that he was back to his best.

And, while live on TNT Sports, McCoist shared his thoughts on Salah’s first Champions League goal of the season.

“This is magnificent. It’s all about the weight of the return pass to him and the use of Salah’s body,” he said.

“Look at his body strength, he puts himself in between two defenders and once he gets in that position, you know he’s finishing.

“Great goal.”

Mohamed Salah needs to keep performing at this level for Liverpool

All of Liverpool’s Premier League wins this season have come thanks to late goals, with Wednesday’s game against Atletico following suit.

And, while their first two goals can’t be down to just one player in Salah, the fact that he was showing signs of the player he was last season will have massively helped.

Mohamed Salah’s 2025-26 season in numbers so far.

The attacker was Liverpool’s best player last term and, this season, it’s felt like he’s been miles off the pace.

However, now that he’s got off the mark in the Champions League, we could now end up seeing another side of the attacker that we haven’t seen this term, which, at the end of the day, is exactly what Slot will want.
