Liverpool face even more competition for Marc Guehi as six-time Champions League winners enter race

Marc Guehi should’ve already been a Liverpool player by now.

The centre-back underwent his medical with the Reds on deadline day, and even though a fee was agreed, Crystal Palace pulled out of the deal at the last minute.

The arrival of the centre-back would have been the cherry on top of the cake for Liverpool after they also managed to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle on deadline day.

Although the Reds had a pretty impressive transfer window, Guehi would’ve made it perfect with his arrival, easily making it a 10/10.

And, while some may argue that the players Liverpool have brought in have already made it perfect, there’s still a nagging feeling that Guehi’s arrival could’ve been one of the most important of the window.

However, now that he’s still a Palace player and has no intention of extending his contract, the prospect of signing him for free has piqued the interest of clubs across the globe, with yet another European giant now entering the frame.

Bayern Munich may now end up making a move for Marc Guehi

At the moment, it’s hard to deny that Guehi is one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.

He’s often one of the first names on Thomas Tuchel’s England teamsheet, with the defender forming a solid partnership with Dan Burn during the international break.

And, although Liverpool is Guehi’s ideal destination, the fact that clubs such as Real Madrid are now circling him means that his head could be turned.

As per a fresh report from journalist Christian Falk, six-time Champions League winners Bayern Munich may end up making a move for the Englishman this season.

“In defence, you have Marc Guehi – sure, the Crystal Palace centre-back is interesting. But he also would have cost money this summer. With the window shut, they now want to see how the defence will perform,” he wrote on the CF Bayern Insider website.

“Now, they have to see if it works, or if they’ll want to sell Kim Min-jae. Guehi could be an option for the future, but on this list is also Castello Lukeba from RB Leipzig.”

Liverpool need to prove they’re serious about signing Marc Guehi and make a move in January

If Liverpool really want Guehi to become their new defender, they may have to spend a couple of quid to bring him to Anfield in January.

One thing that was made clear in the summer transfer window was that, if Liverpool have a target in mind, they’ll very rarely stray away from their first option.

It’s been reported multiple times that if a deal for Isak didn’t work out, Slot would have stuck it out with four senior attacking options and Rio Ngumoha this term.

The only exception to this rule this term was with Florian Wirtz. The German was Slot’s number one target since the start.

However, with Bayern Munich and Manchester City both strongly interested, the Reds were also eyeing up Rayan Cherki, with Slot even meeting up with the Frenchman.

In the end, Liverpool got their man, and, as with most players that the Reds want to sign, it’s clear that, if they don’t get their first-choice targets, they’d rather not do a deal at all.

So, in reality, if they’re not going to make a move for another centre-back other than Guehi, it makes sense for them to give Palace a smaller fee than originally agreed upon to acquire his services.
