Liverpool have a fair few members of their first-team squad on international duty at the moment.
The Reds’ Premier League campaign couldn’t have started off any better either, with the Anfield outfit winning all three of their opening games.
Indeed, there were some dodgy moments throughout those clashes, but the main thing that matters is that they’ve ended their first games with nine points.
And, now that Alexander Isak is officially a Liverpool player, it’s hard to see how this winning streak won’t be carried on.
That is, especially since one of their regular starters has just put in a solid performance for his country.
Andy Robertson is lauded by the Scottish media for his performance
Andy Robertson has recently lost his place to Milos Kerkez in Liverpool’s starting XI.
The 2024-25 season was arguably the worst of the Scotsman’s Liverpool stint, and, although he used to be one of the best left-backs in the Premier League, it was a clear area of weakness last term.
However, with Kostas Tsimikas now on loan to Roma, the battle for the starting left-back spot in Slot’s team is on.
And, after his performance for Scotland against Belarus in their 2-0 win on Monday evening, Robertson looks to have made a solid case for himself.
The Scotsman lauded the captain for his support work with former Liverpool ace Ben Gannon Doak, with his constant bombing up and down the wing a key area of praise.
“The captain once again patrolled the left flank and looked to support Gannon-Doak whenever the Scots went on the offensive. Had one slack back-pass that Gunn would not thank him for, and the hosts tried to go over the top of him on a few occasions. Like the rest of the defence, showed up fine,” they wrote.
The Herald went a similar way and praised the defender, but instead, it was his deliveries that caught the eye.
“Combined with Gannon Doak well on the left flank, and provided quality deliveries into the box from deep. A necessary mature performance from the Scotland captain.”
Lastly, the Edinburgh News singled out a specific run in the second half of the clash which was dubbed ‘terrific.’
“Dangerous free-kick headed over by Souttar. Caught under the ball midway through second half which led to a half-chance. Terrific driving run and cross to pick out Adams late on,” they wrote.
Arne Slot may have a slight problem on his hands at Liverpool this season
Over the last few years, Liverpool have always had Robertson as their starting left-back.
The defender was brought in from Hull back in 2017 for a fee worth £8million and, although his transfer was seen as a bit of a risk from Jurgen Klopp at the time, it turned out to be some of the best money he’s ever spent.
The Scotsman always put 110 per cent effort in during every game and, although he may have slowed down over the last season or so, the fact he was seen as one of Scotland’s best players on Monday shows how good he still is.
Indeed, Kerkez is likely to be the first choice this term, but if he doesn’t manage to get used to being a Liverpool player soon, then his aggressive side could create a slight problem for Slot.
That is, especially if Robertson carries on playing at the level he showed on Monday.
At the moment, nothing is likely to change, but if by the next international break Kerkez isn’t up to his best, we could see the Scotsman back in contention for the starting spot in Slot’s team.
