Thomas Tuchel gives insight into what Marc Guehi has been doing after Liverpool move collapsed

Marc Guehi’s failed Liverpool transfer was the biggest story of deadline day.

For months, the Crystal Palace captain had his heart set on making the move to Anfield, but in the end, Steve Parish and Oliver Glasner forced him to stay.

Indeed, they did allow him to undergo his medical with the Premier League champions, but since they couldn’t sign a replacement in time, they pulled out of the deal.

And, to make things even worse, they even gave Guehi and Liverpool false hope that the deal was going to go through, as they put in a deal sheet to allow extra time for his transfer to be finalised.

Although Guehi hasn’t said anything publicly about the debacle, England manager Tuchel has given an insight into how the Englishman is feeling.

Marc Guehi has had a “brilliant attitude” about his failed transfer to Liverpool

It goes without saying that Guehi deserves to be at a club fighting for trophies on a regular basis.

And, while he may have won two over the last three months with the Eagles, that isn’t normal.

The centre-back is one of England’s best, and, if they want a chance of winning the 2026 World Cup in the summer, their players need to be playing at the highest level.

And, since Liverpool are the reigning Premier League champions, there literally wouldn’t have been a better team for him to join this summer.

Even though Liverpool’s fanbase were rather miffed about missing out on the 24-year-old, it seems like Guehi has taken it on the chin.

“Of course, we had a chat with him. He looks absolutely fine and impressive on the field; he has a good couple of weeks behind him on the performance side,” Tuchel said during his England press conference.

“He is the main driver of Crystal Palace’s success; he is the captain and the leader, and he played very impressively at the end of last season.

“He has continued like that in camp, and he handles it [his transfer situation] with respect and with and with brilliant attitude.”

Liverpool will still end up signing Marc Guehi at one point or another

Although Arne Slot may have missed out on his dream centre-back target this time around, that doesn’t mean Liverpool won’t go in for him again.

Indeed, some, such as Gary Lineker, believe that the Englishman should stick it out at Palace and end up leaving for nothing at the end of the season.

However, if Parish is willing to re-enter into negotiations for the centre-back and perhaps agree to a much lower fee, there’s no reason why Liverpool shouldn’t go for him.

In the summer, they already received a £13million bid from AC Milan for Joe Gomez, and, although it’s not much, it would likely cover the vast majority of Guehi’s fee.

For now, Slot will likely stick it out and see if Ibrahima Konate can pick up his performance levels; if not, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Guehi getting linked with Anfield again in the lead-up to the January transfer window.
